Second Injury Fund

Second Injury Fund is a special fund which is set up in order to provide additional compensation for individuals with pre-existing injuries, disabilities or handicaps. This program started after WWII. Its purpose was to encourage employers to hire individuals with severe injuries or handicaps. Employers were reluctant to hire returning veterans who had sustained serious injuries during the war. The idea was to send a message to employers that if a severely handicapped worker sustains an injury on the job, the State of Missouri will intervene and pay the difference if a combination of disabilities renders an employee totally disabled. The Second Injury Fund is often an overlooked benefit, especially when an injured employee is unrepresented.
